Sweet & Sour Cabbage

This is a very old recipe that I had actually forgotten about. I remember having this at family reunions when I was a little girl. I was never a big fan then, but I may try it again and see what I think now.

4 pounds cabbage sliced finely. Par boil in salt water for 2 minutes. Drain and rinse. Put back into pan with a little fresh water.

Add to cabbage:

  • 1/4 c vinegar
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 apple peeled and sliced
  • 1 c celery sliced thin
  • 1 onion sliced

Fry 3 pieces of bacon. Crumble bacon. Add bacon grease to cabbage mixture and cook until tender. Add bacon just before serving. May add caraway seeds.

“One Bowl” Brownies

Brownies from the box are super easy, but these sound really easy too. My husband loves brownies, so we will have to try these to see if they are better than box brownies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 stick plus 1 Tbsp butter
  • 7 Tbsp cocoa
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3/4 c self-rising flour
  • 1/2 c nuts

You don’t need a mixer, just stir by hand. Melt butter and stir in cocoa. Them mix rest of ingredients. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

“Easy and good. Given to me by my mother, Nathlyn Fisher.”

Soup for Two

This is a simple little soup recipe, but I thought it is interesting because it is a soup base for whatever vegetable you choose.

Cook about 2 cups of corn and 1 medium onion until done. Put it in blender, barely chop.

In a pan melt 2 tablespoons butter; add two tablespoons flour. Mix, add 1 c. milk. Cook til medium thick. Add corn mixture and warm. If too thick, add a little more milk.

You may substitute squash or broccoli instead of corn.

  • 2 T chopped onion
  • 1/2 c mayonnaise

  • 2 tsp peanut butter

Mix mayonnaise, mustard, salt, and peanut butter together. Toss over cabbage, carrots, celery, and onion.

Cherry Cheese Pie

How have I never had this? Or heard of it? This sounds amazing. There are 3 versions of this recipe in this book. I am sharing the first one in hopes that it is the best one.

This recipe is from a vintage cookbook named Bloomingdale Homemakers Club 1978-1979. With mixed emotions I have this cookbook for sale on my Etsy site since I try to limit the vintage cookbooks I keep to Savannah, Georgia only.

Cherry Cheese Pie

  • 1 8oz pkg cream cheese
  • 1 can condensed milk
  • 1/3 c lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • 1 graham cracker pie crust

In a bowl beat cheese till light and fluffy. Add condensed milk, blend thoroughly. Stir in lemon juice and vanilla. Pour into crust. Chill 3 hours or until firm. Top with cherry pie filling before serving.

Chocolate Buttermilk Cake

This is a recipe that was cut out and saved from 1976. It was in the Westside Weekly newspaper on April 1, 1976. I am not sure where that newspaper is from, possibly Philadelphia. I found the article in a Georgia cookbook.

Chocolate Buttermilk Cake

  • 1 2/3 c self rising flour
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1/2 c cocoa
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 1/2 c melted shortening or oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla

Grease and flour square pan. Set oven at 375 degrees. Mix sugar, cocoa and flour (if using plain flour add 1 Tbsp soda and 1/2 tsp salt). Beat in buttermilk, shortening or oil, and vanilla. Stir until smooth. Spread into pan and bake for 30 minutes.

Icing

  • 1 box powdered sugar
  • 1/2 c cocoa
  • 3/4 stick softened butter or oleo
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • milk (for liquid)

Combine all ingredients, beat well and spread on cooled cake.

Punch

I love finding handwritten recipes in my older cookbooks and this is my second one today! It is a simple recipe, but sounded good so I thought I would share it. I don’t think I have had punch at a party in forever. My son’s parties, his and the one’s we go to, always have pouch drinks or box drinks. Any other parties or get togethers, even weddings these days seem to have either poured drinks or canned drinks. I think it probably is much easier than dealing with a punch bowl and cups. Anyway, here it is:

Punch

  • 1 6oz frozen orange juice
  • 1 6oz frozen limeade
  • 1 6oz frozen lemonade
  • 2 10oz frozen sliced strawberries
  • 3 cups cold water
  • 1 2 liter ginger ale

Makes 1 gallon.

Cheese Straws

When looking through one of my older cookbooks I came upon a handwritten recipe for “Wright’s Cheese Straws”. I am not sure who Wright is and googling didn’t help. It was in a Pooler, Georgia cookbook from Holy Angels Episcopal Church. The cookbook itself is from 1984, but I am not sure the age of the recipe. I love cheese straws. I haven’t found a recipe as good as the ones we used to get at Christmas parties, so I will be trying this soon! Maybe this recipe will have that taste.

Wright’s Cheese Straws

  • 1 pd sharp grated cheese
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 2 c flour
  • tsp salt
  • pinch red pepper

(love this) Mix it up and stuff into a cookie press and grind? it out in strips. Bake at 425 degrees – Just look after them and check every few minutes.

Easy Crock-Pot Baked Beans

I thought this looked interesting. I have never made Baked Beans ‘from scratch’. This is from an old vintage cookbook titled ‘North Dakota Food is Love’.

Ingredients:

  • 4 c dried navy beans, un cooked and rinsed
  • 8 c water
  • 1 c brown sugar
  • 1/2 pound dice bacon
  • 2 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 pepper
  • 4 Tbsp molasses
  • 1/4 c ketchup
  • 1 small minced onion

Mix all together in a 4-quart crock-pot and bake all night on low (8 hours). In the morning, turn on high for 3 to 4 hours. They should be ready to go by noon.

They end the recipe with ‘These are very good’

Barbecue Cups

So when I saw this I couldn’t pass up sharing it. We loved these as kids. This version is barbecue beef, but we did this with so many combinations. One of our favorites was pizza sauce, cut up peperoni, and mozzarella. As kids we made these a lot ourselves because it was easy to make with ‘whomp’ (canned) biscuits. Also, we like to break the newer super flaky biscuits in half. When we made these as kids the biscuits weren’t quite so big and didn’t puff up as much.

This recipe is from a vintage cookbook from Saluda, South Carolina. The book is titled Taste of Hollywood – Hollywood Elementary School.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 c barbecue sauce
  • small onion chopped
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 8oz can refrigerated biscuits
  • 3/4 c shredded Cheddar cheese

Sauté ground beef and onion until browned, stirring to crumble; drain off pan drippings. Stir in barbecue sauce and brown sugar. Place each biscuit in greased muffin cups, pressing to cover bottom and sides. Spoon mixture into cups and sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 12.
