This is a recipe that was cut out and saved from 1976. It was in the Westside Weekly newspaper on April 1, 1976. I am not sure where that newspaper is from, possibly Philadelphia. I found the article in a Georgia cookbook.
Chocolate Buttermilk Cake
- 1 2/3 c self rising flour
- 1 c sugar
- 1/2 c cocoa
- 1 c buttermilk
- 1/2 c melted shortening or oil
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
Grease and flour square pan. Set oven at 375 degrees. Mix sugar, cocoa and flour (if using plain flour add 1 Tbsp soda and 1/2 tsp salt). Beat in buttermilk, shortening or oil, and vanilla. Stir until smooth. Spread into pan and bake for 30 minutes.
Icing
- 1 box powdered sugar
- 1/2 c cocoa
- 3/4 stick softened butter or oleo
- 1 tsp vanilla
- milk (for liquid)
Combine all ingredients, beat well and spread on cooled cake.
