Great-Great Grandmother Cowen’s Soft Ginger Cookies

This recipe is from the vintage cookbook North Dakota Where Food is Love published in 1994. The recipe gives credit to Mary Cowen (1869-1965).

  • 1/2 c butter
  • 1/2 c lard
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 c molasses
  • 1/2 c sour milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 2 tsp baking soda

Use enough flour to make a soft dough; stiff enough to roll out on a floured board, about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out and sprinkle with sugar. Bake on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
